HIV INFECTION AND AIDS: PREVENTION OF HIV INFECTION
Prevention of HIV infection includes abstinence from high-risk sexual activities, the use of a condom with the spermicide nonoxynol-9 if sexually active, limiting the number of sexual partners, maintaining a monogamous relationship with someone who is HIV-free, and refraining from the use of intravenous drugs. For pregnant women who are HIV-infected, the administration of AZT can dramatically decrease the risk of their babies being born infected. Therefore, if they have participated in high-risk behaviors (or even if they have not), they might want to have an AIDS test to determine whether AZT is warranted.
The use of condoms is one of the most effective precautions sexually active people can take to prevent contracting HIV infection or other sexually transmitted diseases. Yet, there are various barriers preventing them from doing so.
