HIV INFECTION AND AIDS: PREVALENCE OF HIV INFECTION AND AIDS
The number of people infected with HIV and the number of people with AIDS keeps increasing. Although we realize that any figures we give you will soon be outdated, we present figures published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. government to place the problem in perspective. As of the beginning of 1996, WHO estimates there were approximately 4.5 million cases of AIDS worldwide and an additional 18.5 million adults and 1.5 million children infected with HIV. In the United States, over half a million AIDS cases have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That is larger than the population of the state of Wyoming or the city of Cleveland. Figure 6.7 depicts newly reported AIDS cases by state for a one-year period. Of course, many more of our fellow citizens are infected with the virus but have not yet developed AIDS.
Nearly 8,000 new cases of AIDS were diagnosed among U.S. individuals aged 13 and older in 1994. Of these newly diagnosed cases, 18 percent were women; with 77 percent of those cases African American and Hispanic women. Forty-one percent of the new AIDS cases among women were attributed to intravenous drug use, 38 percent to heterosexual contact with an infected partner, and the remaining cases to transfusion with contaminated blood or of unknown origin.
