Drug Medical Information
HIV INFECTION AND AIDS: TREATMENT OF HIV INFECTION
Rather than testing for the presence of the virus itself, HIV infection is diagnosed with a blood test (called ELISA—enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) that identifies the presence of antibodies that develop in response to HIV. If the test is positive for these antibodies, another more sophisticated test (Western blot) is administered to confirm this result. However, it may take anywhere from three to eight months for enough of these antibodies to develop to be identifiable through the AIDS test. Consequently, someone may test negative even though he or she is infected. Further, this person may still transmit the virus to other people.
Although HIV infection is incurable and inevitably leads to death, there are some medications that appear to be effective in prolonging debilitating symptoms. The most well known of these drugs is AZT (azidothymidine). Recent studies have found a combination of AZT with other drugs is most effective in prolonging symptom-free living among people infected with HIV.
