HIV INFECTION AND AIDS: ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a condition caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is called a syndrome because it consists of a number of conditions resulting from a decreased ability of the body's immunological system to ward off infections and other threats to health. Among the syndrome's manifestations are pneumonia, cancer, and other opportunistic infections (infections resulting from lowered resistance of a weakened immune system). HIV is transmitted through bodily fluids, predominantly blood, semen, and vaginal secretions. It can also be transmitted from an infected pregnant woman to her fetus. In order to infect someone, HIV must have a route of entry into the body. The most common ways HIV is transmitted are through sex and the use of intravenous drugs. Sexual intercourse, oral-genital sex, or anal intercourse in which bodily fluids are exchanged are particularly risky activities. Intravenous drug use, in which a needle is shared, may result in HIV being directly deposited into the bloodstream.
